Vinayaka Chaturthi or Ganesh Chaturthi falls on September 9, 2013. While not as colourful or eventful as Diwali, Ganesh Chaturthi was definitely one of those festivals celebrated at home because, come on, who doesn't like Ganesha, right? The more fervent celebrations like immersing the Ganesha, etc, was new to me when I moved to Hyderabad and I used to watch the procession with much interest on TV each year (braving crowds is not my idea of fun, ever). In Singapore, a colleague would invite us all over for darshan through the day and it's shameful that I never made it through my 5 years there. Ah well. Most of mine are South Indian recipes for Ganesh Chaturthi although the festival is celebrated throughout India pretty much.

Sweet Modak for Ganesh Chaturthi
Anyway, the first Vinayaka Chaturthi in Sydney will have to go uneventful due to circumstances but I am sure many of you are gearing up top celebrate with lots of food. Modak or Modakam is Lord Ganesh's favourite and we usually make and love the sweet modak with jaggery filling. Sundal is another regular and there are many different varieties of sundal you can make for Ganesh Chaturthi.
Here are some Ganesh Chaturthi Recipes in Edible Garden to get you all set up to cook for the occasion.
